When I encountered the post about the FAB Over 40 competitions, I questioned whether my age might disqualify me from participating. Particularly after reviewing the site's previous winners, their backgrounds, education and careers, I wondered if I would be a suitable candidate. After considering this for several days, I chose not to discuss my thoughts with anyone close to me, as I desired the decision to be entirely my own. Ultimately, I decided to proceed and now find myself competing for a Top 10 spot to continue advancing (at the time of publishing this blog post). This decision has led me to write this article for my Hello Happy: Beacons of Positivity blog/website.
Note to self: It is never too late to pursue new challenges and opportunities.
World, I am ready!
It's Never Too Late: Embracing Your Dreams at Any Age
Age is a paradox. While numbers accumulate with each passing year, the spirit within us remains ageless, ever pulsating with dreams and desires. Yet, society often whispers that certain doors close as we grow older, that opportunities fade, and that dreaming is the luxury of the young. But let me tell you a secret: You are not too old, and it's not too late to pursue whatever you dream.
The Myth of "Too Late"
We live under the illusion that life follows a strict timeline—a checklist of milestones to be achieved by certain ages: graduate by 22, settle into a career by 25, start a family by 30, and so on. But life's most beautiful stories often unfold outside these arbitrary timelines.
Think of Colonel Harland Sanders, who founded KFC at age 65 after years of failures and setbacks. Or Grandma Moses, who began her illustrious painting career in her late 70s, proving that creativity knows no expiration date. Nelson Mandela became President of South Africa at 75, embodying perseverance and dedication. These individuals didn't just defy expectations; they redefined them.
The Treasure of Experience
With age comes a wealth of experience tapestry woven with threads of triumphs, failures, lessons, and growth. This rich reserve is your unique advantage. You've navigated life's complexities, honed your resilience, and developed insights that younger selves haven't had time to cultivate.
Your dreams now are likely more aligned with your authentic self. You're clearer about what you want and, importantly, why you want it. This clarity fuels a purpose-driven pursuit, making your journey toward your dreams even more meaningful.
Breaking Free from Self-Imposed Limits
Often, the biggest barriers are the ones we construct ourselves, fears, doubts, and the ever-persistent "what ifs." But consider this: Time will pass regardless. Would you rather spend it wondering about what could have been or embracing the exhilarating pursuit of your aspirations?
It's natural to fear the unknown, but regret is a far heavier burden than failure ever could be. Every step you take towards your dream, no matter how small, is a victory over inertia.
Steps to Ignite Your Journey
- Acknowledge Your Dream
- Write it down. Bring it from the realm of thought into tangible reality.
- Reflect on why this dream matters to you. Connecting with your "why" fuels motivation.
- Set Realistic Goals
- Break your dream into actionable steps.
- Set short-term objectives that lead toward your long-term vision.
- Cultivate a Growth Mindset
- Embrace challenges as opportunities to learn.
- Remind yourself that skills and talents can be developed at any age.
- Build Your Support Network
- Surround yourself with positive influences.
- Seek out mentors, join communities, or take classes related to your interest.
- Take Consistent Action
- Commit to daily or weekly actions that propel you forward.
- Celebrate progress, no matter how small.
Inspiration from Those Who Have Walked the Path
- Vera Wang, who entered the fashion industry at 40, is now a renowned designer.
- Ray Kroc purchased McDonald's at 52, transforming it into a global empire.
- Laura Ingalls Wilder published her first "Little House" book at 65, enriching children's literature for generations.
Their stories are not exceptions; they're reminders that it's the passion, not age, that drives success.
Embracing the Present Moment
There's profound power in embracing the present. The past has shaped you, but it doesn't define your future. Similarly, the future is unwritten, a canvas awaiting your brushstrokes. This is part of the mission of Hello Happy: Beacons of Positivity, we are all canvases.
Mindfulness practices, like meditation and journaling, can anchor you in the now, reducing anxiety about the future and regrets about the past. They sharpen your focus and enhance creativity, serving as valuable tools as you embark on your journey.
The Ripple Effect of Pursuing Your Dreams
When you chase your dreams, you don't just transform your own life—you inspire others. You become a beacon of possibility for friends, family, and even strangers who witness your courage. Your actions can ignite a chain reaction of positivity and change.
Overcoming Obstacles
Challenges will arise—that's a given in any worthwhile pursuit. But remember:
- Failure is Feedback: Each setback is an opportunity to learn and adjust your approach.
- Age Brings Resilience: You've overcome obstacles before; this is no different.
- Seek Help When Needed: Don't hesitate to ask for assistance or advice. Collaboration often leads to greater innovation.
Your Dream Matters
No matter how big or small, your dream holds value. It's a manifestation of your desires, talents, and purpose. Pursuing it is an act of self-love and respect.
Closing Thoughts
So, cast aside the notion that it's too late or that you're too old. Those are myths meant to be dispelled. The only true limitation is the one you accept. Stand tall, take a deep breath, and step boldly toward your dreams.
The world is waiting for the unique contributions that only you can offer. Your journey not only enriches your life but adds a verse to the collective human story.
In making the decision to enter the FAB Over 40 competition, I dismissed the idea that I was too old or that it was too late in life to embark on such a journey. Regardless of the outcome, I pursued a dream by entering a competition that includes potentially thousands of women from around the world.
